At Yesterday* we set out to find photographs of New Zealand's past from fresh and unseen perspectives showcasing breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cities, and unique cultural moments.
It all began ten years ago, with the discovery of an aerial shot of Karangahape Road, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland taken in 1960 by Whites Aviation for George Court & Sons Ltd. The familiar cityscape – Myers Park, iconic buildings like George Court and St Kevins Arcade – instantly resonated. Yet, upon closer look, a different era unfolded. Vintage cars, the non-existent motorways, a towering gas silo marking a bygone skyline. To this day we lose ourselves in the details of this image and find something new we hadn't seen before.
This is the essence of Yesterday* – creating intrigue through art by highlighting moments of our country’s history that foster connection and conversation.
