By the 1960s, tourism was growing in Aotearoa New Zealand, and scenic flights over the Southern Alps were gaining popularity. Mount Cook Airlines Cessna 180 was a popular choice for small commercial flights due to its capacity (typically 4-6 passengers), good visibility from the cabin, and ability to handle mountain flying.

Fox Glacier, with its easily accessible location and dramatic scenery, would have undoubtedly been a highlight on Mount Cook Airlines scenic flight routes.

The photograph was taken by Whites Aviation, who produced a series of popular illustrated publications of aerial photography and aviation history.
