Step back to 1967, a time of change and a different pace of life.

This vintage print by G. Riethermaier captures a quintessential Kiwi moment. A diverse group of patrons, some in formal attire, others more relaxed, gather at the Poenamo Motor Inn in Auckland. The scene is filled with familiar sights: Ray-Ban sunglasses, packs of Rothmans, and jugs of Steinlager. A classic MG Midget convertible and a Honda C100E motor scooter add to the culture and nostalgic charm.

This year marked a significant change in New Zealand's social landscape. A referendum voted to extend bar closing times from 6 PM to 10 PM, ending the infamous "six o'clock swill." This era of rapid drinking, a byproduct of wartime restrictions and moral regulations, was finally consigned to history.

This vintage print transports you to the vibrant beer garden of the Poenamo Hotel in Northcote during the lively 1960s. The scene is alive with the charm of retro aesthetics, featuring an array of tables and chairs under colorful sun umbrellas, inviting patrons to relax with a cold pint of Lion beer or Steinlager. The image captures a moment of camaraderie as friends gather, enjoying their drinks in the open air, while smokers casually puff away on Rothmans cigarettes, embodying the carefree spirit of the time. Classic cars, including an MG Midget convertible and a sleek Honda C100E scooter, are parked nearby, adding a touch of nostalgia and highlighting the era's automotive culture. Every detail in this black-and-white photograph tells a story— from the furnishings to the bustling atmosphere filled with laughter and chatter. The Poenamo Motel stands proudly in the background, a hallmark of North Shore hospitality. This historic print is not just a window into a bygone era but also a celebration of New Zealand's social scene, encapsulating the joy of gathering with friends and enjoying life's simple pleasures. Perfect for collectors and enthusiasts of vintage New Zealand photography, this piece is a timeless reminder of the iconic moments that shaped local culture.
