Get lost in the views of this 1956 framed print of Hanmer Springs before the town turned into the tourist destination of today. The photograph was captured by Whites Aviation who were known for their aerial photography of New Zealand.

Hanmer Springs' and it's hot springs boast a rich history. Known to Maori travellers for centuries, the first documented European discovery was in 1859. Initial development was slow, with the first bathhouse built in 1883 and nude bathing the norm (segregated by gender). Bathing customs evolved to include segregated and then mixed bathing, while the belief in the health benefits of the waters led to a sanatorium in 1897. After facing challenges, community efforts secured funding to transform the town and springs into tourist destination it is today.
