The Kawaroa Swimming pool in Ngāmotu New Plymouth (now the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre) began life in 1903 as the Kawaroa Saltwater Baths, set directly into the reef of the same name. The 50-metre freshwater pool was built in 1963 and its iconic chequered concrete, kidney shaped children's pool, retro clock and diving boards are still there to this day.

The photograph was taken as part of the Communicate New Zealand Black & White Collection. These prints were used for reference at National Publicity Studios whose purpose was to provide advice and services to the government entities for publicity material aimed at conveying a favourable image of Aotearoa New Zealand.

This vintage photographic print captures the charm of a classic Kiwi summer at the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre, nestled along the scenic waterfront of Kawaroa Park in Taranaki. Taken in the 1960s, this image embodies the laid-back, sun-drenched vibe of the era, showcasing a lively scene at the iconic kidney-shaped pool—a popular spot for locals to cool off on hot summer days. Bathers lounge in retro swimwear, or “togs,” against a backdrop of sparkling blue water, while others dive in or relax poolside, embracing the joys of long, lazy days by the water. Set near Tisch Avenue and just steps from the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway, this public pool is a beloved local gem, blending views of the coastline with the lively energy of summer gatherings. The photograph’s vintage tones highlight the retro styles of the time, making it an ideal piece for fans of NZ art and vintage prints that celebrate New Zealand’s unique coastal lifestyle. This print not only recalls the simple pleasures of a 60s Kiwi summer but also preserves a slice of Taranaki’s history, capturing an era when community pools like this one were the heart of summer memories.
