This summer scene on Lake Wakatipu at Kelvin Grove, Frankton Arm in the 1970s, features classic 70s speed boats, water skiers and beachgoers enjoying the sunshine.

Lake Wakatipu holds the title of Aotearoa New Zealand's longest lake, stretching over 80 kilometres. Its depth is equally impressive, reaching 380 metres below the surface, making it one of the country's largest lakes as well.

D. Nicholson captured this image for the National Publicity Studios. Established in 1945, the National Publicity Studios aimed to create a positive image of Aotearoa New Zealand by providing photographic, art, and display services to government departments.

This stunning vintage photographic print from the 1970s captures the lively spirit of summer at Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown, Otago. The image transports you to a sun-drenched day by the lakeside, where speed boats glide across the sparkling waters, and sunbathers lounge on the beach, soaking up the warm rays. The scene is alive with activity—people swimming and enjoying water skiing, showcasing the exhilarating water sports that the lake has long been famous for. The majestic Remarkables and the Southern Alps frame the background, adding a breathtaking natural beauty that defines the South Island's landscape. Swim suits and casual summer attire fill the frame, evoking a sense of nostalgia for holidays spent by the lake with friends and family. Notable features like the wharf and scattered stones along the shore create a charming rustic feel, reminiscent of carefree summer days spent outdoors. Captured in black-and-white photography, this print embodies the vintage aesthetic of the era while preserving the joyful memories associated with Lake Wakatipu. It serves as a perfect piece for lovers of retro prints and historic New Zealand photography, celebrating the timeless allure of one of New Zealand's most picturesque destinations.
