Get lost in this 1951 NZ art print of Ahuriri Napier's Marine Parade beachfront, lined with its iconic 100+ year-old Norfolk pine trees. Look closely, and several of Ahuriri Napier's well-known landmarks still remain today, such as the Sound Shell, Marine Parade Gardens, and it's art deco buildings. However, a few old landmarks stand out, like the Municipal Salt Water baths and sports facilities lining the parade.

‍Originally, the area was prone to flooding due to tidal lagoons and storms, but Hawkes Bay's devastating 1931 earthquake uplifted the beach by about 2 metres, protecting the area from high seas. This natural shift, combined with rubble from the earthquake used to reclaim some land, allowed Marine Parade to truly flourish as a public space.

‍This captivating photograph, captured by Whites Aviation, is part of their esteemed series of aerial photography and aviation history publications.
