Claimed to be New Zealand's fastest commercial launch at the time, the Meteor II, built by Collings and Bell, could reach speeds of 36 knots and carried up to 12 passengers. The water taxi, primarily used for tourism on Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown, also served routes in the Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Picton, and the Marlborough Sounds.

The photo was taken by Whites Aviation, known for their popular aerial photography publications and aviation history collections.
