This captivating framed print transports you to the picturesque coastline of "The Mount" in 1951, capturing its serene beauty before the surge in population. Back then, Mauao Mount Maunganui, Tauranga, was home to fewer than 2000 residents. The establishment of a deep-water port in the 1960s and the Harbour Bridge in the 1980s fuelled the Mount's population to what it is today.

The photograph, taken by Whites Aviation, is part of their renowned series of aerial photography and aviation history publications, offering a captivating glimpse into Aotearoa New Zealand's past.

Imagine a vintage print of Mt Maunganui, a timeless keepsake capturing the spirit of New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty. The illustration brings to life "The Mount" in all its summer splendor, featuring iconic landmarks like Salisbury Wharf, where classic yachts and sailboats glide across the water, and Leisure Island, also known as Moturiki Island, that juts elegantly into the sparkling sea. The scene is alive with the warmth of a hot summer day, evoking memories of family holidays spent swimming, camping, and exploring the white sand dunes stretching along Marine Parade and Papamoa Beach. In this print, delicate details pay homage to the area’s beloved “bach culture.” You can see a scattering of baches, or beach houses, each hinting at kiwi art and vintage design, blending seamlessly into the coastal landscape. Farther out, Mount Drury Reserve and Hopukiore sit quietly in the background, while the dunes along the beach are depicted in soft pastels and earthy tones, capturing the timeless charm of the bay. You may even spot glimpses of nearby Matakana Island and Rangiwaea Island in the distance, nestled beyond the glistening waters of Tauranga Harbour. With a touch of nostalgia, this print transports you to a laid-back Kiwi holiday from days gone by, where art, culture, and nature come together in perfect harmony.
