In 1963, the anniversary of her accession to the Throne and also the one hundred and twenty-third anniversary of the signing of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi | Treaty of Waitangi, Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, visited Aotearoa New Zealand.

Whilst in Pōneke Wellington, Her Majesty presented a silver chalice and paten to St. Paul's Cathedral – these had been used by her grandparents during their tour in 1901.

The photograph itself was taken by Te Kaunihera o Pōneke | Wellington City Council’s Engineering Department which occasionally was requested to photograph Council functions.

Reception to HM Queen Elizabeth II & HRH the Duke of Edinburgh 870228

Vintage photographic prints capturing a moment of elegance and grandeur during a royal visit to Wellington, lovingly known as Pōneke. Set within the timeless architecture of the Wellington Town Hall, this image highlights a formal event, complete with dignitaries, official ceremonies, and the poised presence of the Queen. The hall is beautifully adorned with intricate flower arrangements, indoor plants, and elegant palms, creating a stately backdrop that adds warmth and splendor to the occasion. Guests sit attentively in the rows of seats, dressed in their finest suits and hats, awaiting a speech or formal address. In the background, the hall’s grand organ and the emblematic "ER" and "E2R" symbols add a regal touch, marking the Queen’s presence as both a representative of the Crown and as a symbol of New Zealand’s historical ties to the United Kingdom. This image captures the charm and decorum of the era, set against the backdrop of Wellington's notable landmarks, like Te Ngākau Civic Square and the Michael Fowler Centre, just a stone's throw from Wakefield Street. The print evokes a sense of nostalgia, bringing to life an era where formality and tradition met in civic celebrations, making it a perfect piece for lovers of vintage art and Kiwi history alike.
