The St Luke's shopping mall in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland, opened in 1971 and was one of the most modern shopping centers of its time. Approximately 100,000 people visited on opening day.

This vintage print encapsulates the culture of New Zealand in all its 1970s glory. Classic '70s interiors like its star cluster lights and retro patterns set the scene. Meanwhile, now-classic Holden Kingswood cars grace the mall floor, and surrounding shops like Hayrights (now Farmers), London Bookshops (now Whitcoulls), My Lady, Estelle Rose, and Bobby Joes were once flagship stores.

The photograph was captured by R. Anderson for the National Publicity Studios. Established in 1945, the National Publicity Studios aimed to create a positive image of New Zealand by providing photographic, art, and display services to government departments.
