Capture a piece of Wānaka's past with this distinctive art print from 1956, offering a glimpse into its tranquil charm before the advent of ski fields in the late 1970s redefined it into the vibrant year-round resort town it is today.

Wānaka's name hints at its rich past. It is said to signify a place of Māori knowledge ("wānanga") or honours a local chief ("Ō-Anake or Ō-Anaka"). European settlement began in the 1850s, with gold discovery and sheep stations. Tourism started early too, with the first hotel opening in 1867.

The photograph was taken in November 1956 by Whites Aviation who produced a series of popular illustrated publications of aerial photography and aviation history.
