Queenstown 1959
In the late 1950s, Tāhuna Queenstown was a peaceful town nestled amidst the Southern Alps. A handful of buildings lined the shores of pristine Lake Wakatipu, undisturbed by the jet boats and adventure activities that define the town today. Tourism was seasonal, with sheep farming remaining a prominent activity in the surrounding area. While Coronet Peak, New Zealand's first commercial ski area, had opened in 1947, the town was just beginning to explore its potential for winter sports. Dirt roads hinted at future development, but the true explosion was yet to come.
Fast forward to today, and Tāhuna Queenstown is a world-renowned "Adventure Capital." Hotels and resorts line the lakeshore, while jet boats carve across the water and a vibrant adventure scene thrives. The introduction of the gondola and bungy jumping in the late 20th century cemented Tāhuna Queenstown's reputation for adrenaline-pumping experiences. However, the town hasn't entirely shed its past. Hiking, tramping (backpacking) in stunning locations like Milford, Routeburn, and Hollyford Tracks, and the breathtaking scenery remain key attractions. Tāhuna Queenstown's transformation from a tranquil town to an adventure capital is a remarkable story of development and adaptation, all while retaining its natural beauty.
